Miami Dolphins History

The Miami Dolphins are the oldest continuous major-league professional sports franchise in the state of Florida. Founded by Joe Robbie in 1965, they began play in the American Football League as an expansion team in 1966, then joined the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. The team has made 24 playoff appearances, won 13 division titles, five AFC championships, and two Super Bowl championships. The 1972 Dolphins are the only fully undefeated team in NFL history, finishing the year 17-0 with a victory in Super Bowl VII.

The Miami Dolphins have 17 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including greats such as Larry Csonka, Bob Griese, Dan Marino, and Jason Taylor. Three Dolphins have had their jerseys retired: Csonka’s number 39, Griese’s number 12 and Marino’s number 13.
